PRPS "Barracuda" in "Rinse"
PRPS, which stands for “purpose”, prides itself in using the finest quality cotton from Benin, Senegal, Zimbabwe and Uganda. The cotton is all hand picked, inspected and shipped to Japan. Here it is woven on vintage shuttle looms and the washing processes are done by hand.

PRPS "Barracuda" in "09X"
Both of the styles we have at dutil. are called “The Barracuda”, one in the wash name “Rinse” and one in “09X”.

The “Rinse” washed jean pictured is one of only 199 made in the world, making it a pretty rare jean. It retails at dutil. for $558.00.

PRPS is all about authenticity and the designers have put a significant amount of time into understanding the specific way a jean moulds to its owner’s body and lifestyle. The jeans are pre-conceived from the wrinkles behind the knees and at the hip to the paint drips, drops and rips that decorate them.

It’s the time of year where, as much as we hate to admit it, summer is coming to an end. The days are still hot and the nights temperate, but it’s hard to say for how long. It’s not all bad news though; the end of summer also means new styles, washes and brands are making their way into dutil., which is something to be excited about.
To celebrate the seasonal transition, we thought it would be nice to show you guys some of our new Acnes. Our models were inspired by the garden and frolicked around in the foliage on their own accord as I snapped a few shots.

Acne Women's "Kex" in "Fresh" and Men's "Max" in "Raw"
Acne is a brand from Stockholm, Sweden which started in 1996. The name is an acronym that stands for “ambition to create novel expressions”. Acne wanted to create a collection that was innovative and totally wearable, any day (or night) of the week.

Acne Men's "Max" in "Raw"
Here, our male model wears the “Max” in “Raw”, which retails for $248.00 CAD at our store. The jean is likely to stretch about a full-size with wear, as it is a raw jean, so as per usual, buy them snug. Furthermore, the jean will end up fitting and looking its best if it is worn religiously for 6 months to a year prior to washing. When it is finally time to wash them, use cold water with the jean inside-out, and hang them to dry. Leave an inch at the bottom if you plan on hemming them before washing them, as they could potentially shrink an inch vertically.

Acne Women's "Kex" in "Fresh" and Men's "Max" in "Raw"
Our female model sports a washed pair of Acnes called the “Kex” in “Fresh” for $298.00 CAD. Since this jean is not raw, it won’t stretch out a full-size, but they are likely shrink a bit in the wash, so buy them to fit and don’t wash them for 6 months to a year in order to allow your body to whip them into your own personal shape. When you do wash them, do it in cold water, inside-out, and hang them to dry. To keep the legs long enough, we recommend giving the inseam a quick tug before they dry.
Summer will inevitably be back next year and in the meantime, we can start getting geeked about scarves, jackets, and what it feels like to wear jeans that aren’t sticking to your “summer skin”.
After about a year of High Kai absence from another favourite Swedish brand, Nudie, we are pleased to say that we have the style in stock and in a colour that can only truly be appreciated in cooler weather: black.

Nudie "High Kai" in "Black"
Our female model looks pretty slick wearing the High Kai which retails at dutil. for $218.00 CAD.

Men's Post'age "Eichler" in "Coal" and Nudie Unisex "High Kai" in "Black"
Our male model wears Post’age, a new brand that comes out of L.A. and uses high-quality denim from all over the world. Post’age, since its 2009 launch, maintains that their brand helps to create a bold look in a post modern age. What’s exciting about this particular jean is that it is waxed, and with wear will become almost leathery looking, with some areas becoming shinier, and some areas becoming more matte, making it truly custom to your body and lifestyle. This jean is called the “Eichler”, a slim straight leg, and the waxy finish is in “Coal”. In our shop, this denim confection is retailed at $238.00 CAD.

Men's Post'age "Eichler" in "Coal"
Waxed denim tends to break in a little bit nicer and last longer when it stays away from the wash, but if you can absolutely not stand your unwashed jeans, wash them in cold water only, as heat is the enemy of this kind of finish. Hang them to dry and do not wash them again until you would rather go naked than wear your dirty (but really cool looking) jeans.
And last in this post, but very obviously not least, is a woman’s Post’age jean called the “Manx Skinny” in “Dark Indigo Gold”. The curve-hugging jean boasts some zippered back pockets, some slashy front pockets and a wash that makes my eyes feel good.

Women's Post'age "Manx Skinny" in "Dark Indigo Gold"
The jean retails at dutil., for $238.00 CAD.

American Rag, in LA, has a tailor that is so dedicated to denim that he started his own denim line: Rogue Territory. The brand boasts that it is handmade from start to finish and maintains that attention is placed both on the quality of materials used, as well as the construction of the jean. This careful attention to detail is obvious the second you examine these jeans. They look as good as they feel! The denim is sourced from the best mills all over the world and entirely constructed in LA.

What is more, is that dutil. is the only retailer for Rogue Territory in Canada, so if you are into great fits, beautifully styled, high-quality jeans with a unique story and exclusive feel, come check them out!

Men's Rogue Territory Raw Skinny
Our model is wearing the “Skinny” in “Raw” which retails for $268.00 CAD at dutil. – a pretty remarkable price considering the amount of love and work that goes into this jean which also comes in a straight-leg fit called the “Stanton” (also available at the store).

Button Fly Detail of Men's Rogue Territory Raw Skinny
The jean is raw, so make sure it fits pretty snug in the store, as it is liable to stretch out about a size with wear. Also, for best aging results, avoid washing the jean for 6 months to a year and wear often. When it is time to wash them, follow our standard advice and rinse them in cold water, inside-out and hang them to dry. Allow for an inch of vertical shrinkage when (and if) you decide to hem them prior to washing.

Men's Protégé in 10 Year Wash
Starting out at Diesel, Adriano Goldshmeid learned the intricacies of the perfect washed pair of jeans and in 2004 decided to extricate himself from the Diesel brand in order to start his own company: AG. Bringing what he learned in Diesel’s washhouses to his own line is what makes AG what it is today – a brand famous for its “AG-ed Vintage” washes, which are based on varying years of wear (eg. 5 year, 10 year etc.).

Women's Premiere in 5 Year Wash
AG’s denim comes from mills in Italy and Japan and the jeans are manufactured in Los Angeles, California. The best part is that the washes are all done by-hand at the same factory that sews them in order to keep the quality standard consistent. The art of AG’s perfectly washed jean has garnered the attention of many-a-celebrity with big names such as Kate Winslet, Eva Langoria, Heidi Klum and Jay-Z, and for good reason. Look at them!

Women's Premiere in 5 Year Wash
Shown here is the women’s “Premiere” in “5 Years”. The fit is true-to-size, but will stretch ½ a size with normal wear due to the nature of the fabric, so buy them snug! They retail in the store for $298.00 CAD.

Our male model is wearing the AG jean called the “Protégé” in the “10 Year” wash. The fit is true-to-size, and like the women’s is subject to stretching about ½ a size with wear.
The men’s “Protégé” retails for $338.00 CAD at dutil.
As always, wash cold water, inside-out and hang-to-dry.

Domino Striped Raw Kochi
This striped jean comes from a husband and wife team, Guido & Mary, who are located in Montreal, Canada. Domino’s mission, since its inception in 2007, is to provide great fits at great prices while using environmentally friendly and partially organic washing processes. They source their denim from Japan but manufacture and wash all of their pieces in Montreal, which ensures exceptional quality-control and consistent fits. In fact, the fits are so good that they have attracted A-list celebrities like Jessica Alba, who is known to wear the brand as she gallivants around doing famous things.

Domino Striped Raw Kochi
This particular style is called the “Kochi” and the wash is “Striped Raw”. Although it is considered a raw jean, it does have 1% spandex in it which prevents it from stretching out quite as much as a true raw jean. Regardless, buy it fairly snug, and expect it to stretch about ½ a size with wear.
As far as laundering goes, follow the premium denim mandate and wash infrequently, inside-out in cold water and hang-to-dry.

dutil. "Quintessential Skinny" with contrast stitching.
After years of worshipping denim, dutil. has finally created its own jean. 2010 marks the launch of both a men’s slim-straight leg and a women’s skinny jean which are shown here on our models. dutil. sources the denim for both the men’s and women’s jean from Cone Denim Mills in North Carolina; one of the oldest operating mills in the world (circa 1891)! The jeans are constructed entirely in Vernon, California, making this jean all-North American in order to keep with dutil.’s desire to adhere to America’s long-term and committed relationship with premium denim.

dutil. "Quintessential Slim Straight" red-line selvedge
The men’s jean, deemed the “Quintessential Slim-Straight”, flatters everyone with its slim, but not too slim leg, in a beautifully woven and raw 13.75oz denim. The jean is well-suited to taller guys as it is equipped with a 35” inseam. However, for average-height and shorter guys, the red-line selvedge is best shown off with a slick cuff or sloppy roll, depending on your own personal style. Make sure you buy them snug though, as our raw denim is prone to stretch about a full size with wear. Men’s sizing starts at 23” and goes up to 40” which accommodates a very wide range of body types.

dutil. "Quintessential Slim Straight"
As with any other raw jean, we recommend that you wear it for 6 months to a year prior to washing in order to really allow the fabric and indigo to form to your lifestyle. When it is finally time to wash the jean, we recommend a cold water rinse with the jean inside-out and hanging them out to dry. Should you need hemming prior to washing, allow for an inch of vertical shrinkage so you don’t end up with flood-pants, unless that’s your kind of thing of course!
Furthermore, the jean is available with (or without) a shiny sterling silver “halo” which proudly displays your eyewear when not in-use. Genius!

The women’s jean, also constructed as meticulously as the men’s, is rinsed for softness and contains 5% Polyester and 1% spandex to allow for a women’s natural curves. Also, the jean boasts a contoured waistband that has a higher rise in the back than the front in order to prevent gaping at the waistband and to help avoid displaying your undies when you sit down.

dutil. "The Quintessential" Skinny in tonal stitching
Since the women’s jean is rinsed, it won’t stretch more than ½ a size with wear, but we still recommend purchasing the jean fairly tight so that your body has a chance to work the fabric into your own unique shape. The sizing for our women’s jean starts at 22” for you skinny-minnies and goes up to 33”.

dutil. "Quintessential Skinny" with tonal stitching.
Washing instructions are the same as all premium denim: cold-water rinse, inside-out, hang-to-dry and only when absolutely necessary; do this and dramatically increase the lifespan of your precious denim duds.

The men’s dutil. jean retails for $258.00 CAD without the sterling silver ring and $298.00 CAD with the ring.

dutil. The Quintessential Series launch party
Vancouver’s favourite all denim shop will be celebrating the global launch of their eponymous brand of denim with an in-store party on May 7th 2010. The collection, aptly deemed the Quintessential Series for its back-to-basics aesthetic, will consist of both women’s and men’s premium denim. To commemorate the realization of a year’s hard work of scrupulous designing, dutil will be inviting friends and fans alike to their Gastown store to celebrate and view the collection.
The Quintessential Series is so named because dutil feels it will be offering to consumers their “go-to” jean; their new basic. It’s not surprising they put such an emphasis on fit: with such a great soapbox for consumers to air their likes and grievances upon, it was only a natural progression for the denim store to create their own brand.
“We wanted to make the perfect jean, and we felt it didn’t exist in the marketplace,” founder and creative director Eric Dickstein says. “We look at jeans all day long and we just thought we could do better than what we were seeing.”
Dutil has set its horizons far above the Vancouver retail landscape: they plan on positioning themselves as a global brand in all the best stores in the world. “We want to work with retailers who can communicate our philosophy to the consumer,” says co-owner and former Earnest Sewn Marketing Director Darrin Kenigsberg.
Dutil is the venue in Canada for denim brands to launch. Take for example Montreal’s Naked & Famous. Launched at dutil in 2007, Naked & Famous is now a global brand with rapidly growing popularity, and it all began in the Gastown shop. Among other brands launched at dutil include Rogue Territory, a brand conceived by the in-house tailor at the renowned denim boutique American Rag.
To keep with the North American work wear heritage of denim, the company decided to keep all manufacturing within North America. Their denim comes from one of the oldest denim mills in the world and they jeans are constructed in Vernon, California.
Dutil Denim has been open since 2006. The unique all-denim store concept has established it as a fixture in Canada’s evolving fashion scene.
The party will be held at the store, located at 303 W. Cordova St. on May 7th, 2010 beginning at 8pm.
